Nephrotic syndrome is a presence of two or more symptoms of kidney damage in the body. These symptoms may include:
- Albuminuria: occurrence of large amounts of protein in the urine
- Hyperlipidemia: elevated levels of fat and cholesterol in the blood
- Edema: swelling in the legs, feet, or ankles and around the face or eyes
- hypoalbuminemia: low albumin levels in the blood
Albumin is a type of protein that acts as a sponge and absorbs extra fluid from the body so that the kidneys can remove it. When the albumin level leaks into the urine, the blood may not extract extra fluid from the body, causing fluid retention and ultimately swelling. To treat nephrotic syndrome, nephrologists suggest allopathic treatments while Karma Ayurveda advises patient to take nephrotic syndrome ayurvedic treatment because it has a therapeutical effect on the renal.
Nephrotic syndrome occurs when the kidney’s filters become damaged or enlarge and may allow the large molecules of protein to skip through them.
Glomeruli and tubules are both involved in this process, acting as a filter to preserve important nutrients while eliminating waste. When glomeruli are not able to keep proteins, it is the work of tubule to do so. But when both become damage, albumin may leak from the blood.
In nephrotic syndrome, the glomeruli may allow 3 grams of protein to go along with the urine which is more than 20 times that allowed by healthy kidneys.
What are the main reasons for nephrotic syndrome?
There are primary and secondary causes of nephrotic syndrome. Primary causes of nephrotic syndrome affect the kidneys in the first place while the secondary ones may create a problem in the other part of the body while influencing the kidney function at the same time. For each primary or secondary cause, the best treatment is nephrotic syndrome ayurvedic treatment.
The primary causes of nephrotic syndrome may include:
- Minimal change disease: The kidney tissues under the microscope look normal, but they are some problems going on in the back end. There is no exact known reason why minimal change disease occurs but it stops the kidney from functioning well. Some reasons may include viruses, allergic reactions, drugs, etc.
- Membranous nephropathy: In this condition, the glomeruli in the kidney or its membrane thicken. It may happen because of some autoimmune diseases, such as hepatitis B, lupus, cancers, etc.
- Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis: It occurs because of scar in the kidneys. Some medications, drugs, HIV, viruses may damage the glomeruli and cause you this problem.
- Diabetes: It is the common secondary cause of nephrotic syndrome in adults. The damage to the kidneys because of diabetes is called diabetic nephropathy.
- Lupus: It is an immune system disorder that can damage the kidneys seriously.
- Amyloidosis: This happens when amyloid proteins start building in the blood and damage the kidney function.
What are the signs and symptoms of nephrotic syndrome?
In the initial stages, when the protein loss is normal or less, the kidneys may not show any existing signs on the body. But as soon as UACR, urine albumin creatinine ratio starts rising, many complications may occur. These may include:
- Protein in the urine making it looks like a scrambled egg
- Cloudy urine
- Swelling in the body, especially around the legs, ankles, face, and the eyes
- Loss of hunger
- Nausea and vomiting
- Drowsiness
- Problem in your muscles and joints
Nephrotic syndrome ayurvedic treatment
When a kidney patient first starts to have the problem, not many complications appear at that time. The problem occurs when there is too much loss of protein from the body. If the patient keeps on avoiding the treatment, nephrotic syndrome may also progress to chronic kidney disease which is hard to treat in its early stages. So Doctor Puneet Dhawan suggests patients to take nephrotic syndrome ayurvedic treatment as soon as they get it diagnosed.
