Overview

Proteinuria is an abnormal condition in which the kidneys release too much protein from the urine. Proteinuria is often a sign of some underlying kidney disease because it is the kidneys that result in the slip of protein through their filters or when the kidney’s filter becomes damaged they may allow the protein to pass through them.

Normally, there is only a small portion of protein visible in the urine, but the problem arises when the amount of protein in the urine becomes high and the urine appears foamy or cloudy.

The other less common reason why the body is exhibiting protein in the urine is because of too much production of the protein.

But if the cause is an underlying kidney disease, you should immediately go for the test and take proteinuria treatment.

Are there any signs to know if I have proteinuria?

Most people who have proteinuria have no noticeable signs in the body when there is a little protein in the urine. Until it gets worst it does not trigger any conditions. In a severe situation, you will notice:

  • Peeing more often
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite

If proteinuria is the sign of an underlying kidney disease, the following conditions can be responsible for the damage to the kidneys. High levels of blood sugar and blood pressure may significantly damage the filters in the kidneys and disturb their kidney function.

Other kidney related conditions that can cause proteinuria include:

  • Immune disorders such as lupus
  • Kidney inflammation
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Preeclampsia in pregnant women
  • A buildup of protein in your organs
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Intravascular hemolysis
  • Kidney cancer
  • Heart failure

What are the risk factors?

You are more at the risk of proteinuria if you:
  • Obesity
  • Age over 65
  • A family history of kidney disease
  • African American, Native American, Hispanic, or Pacific Islander descent
Some people get more protein in their urine while standing in a particular condition and not when lying down. This is an absurd form of proteinuria and is usually not threatening.
